Potassium permanganate, KMnO4 - dark violet crystals with a metallic sheen. The refractive index of σ 1,59 (at 20 ° C). Dissolved in water forms a solution dark purple liquid ammonia, acetone (2: 100), methanol, pyridine. Strong oxidizer. Depending on the pH of the solution oxidizes various substances being reduced to manganese compounds of different oxidation states. Aqueous solutions of potassium permanganate is thermodynamically unstable but kinetically quite stable. Their safety increases sharply when stored in the dark.

The use of potassium permanganate mostly based on high ability of oxidizing permanganate ion providing antiseptic activity.
• in medicine as an antiseptic for gargling, washing wounds, burns, and other processing.
• In pharmacology (astringent, irritating, cauterizing and tanning action). Also has a deodorizing effect.
• The alkaline solution of potassium permanganate well washes glassware from grease and other organic substances, additive solutions for liquid gas cleaning
• The solutions are widely used in tinting photos, debilitating component (reducing the density of the images on the film) solutions in the photos.
Potassium permanganate is used as well as:
• bleach various materials
• the extraction of gold from ores,
• oxidant in organic chemistry and the industrial synthesis of (for example, oxidation to carboxylic acids paraffins)
• a source of gaseous oxygen in the laboratory experiments.
